  17. Installation Instructions

  19. To Install QuickTime, download either the Windows 3.x (16 bit) or Windows
  20. 95/NT (32 bit versions:
  21.  
  22.    * Windows 3.x Version (qt16.exe)
  23.    * Windows 95/NT Version (qt32.exe)
  24.  
  25. Locate the downloaded file (qt16.exe or qt32.exe) and double-click on it to
  26. install QuickTime. If you have existing previous versions of QuickTime,
  27. please respond "yes" to all prompts to delete the old files.

  78. Quick Fix for Display Problems
  79.  
  80. QuickTime for Windows is very reliable. However in rare cases you can
  81. experience display problems or crashes when attempting to run QuickTime
  82. movies or pictures. This is usually caused by older or poorly written system
  83. video drivers reporting incorrect video hardware configuration information.
  84. If this occurs you can almost always use the QuickTime control panel to work
  85. around the problem:
  86.  
  87.   1. Open the Windows Control Panel:
  88.      -In Windows 95, select Start/Settings/Control Panel. If you see two
  89.      QuickTime control panels, perform steps 2-4 on both of them.
  90.      -In Windows 3.1 and Windows NT, double-click the Control Panel icon in
  91.      the Main program group.
  92.   2. Double-click the QuickTime control panel icon.
  93.   3. Click the More button, then click the Video tab at the top of the
  94.      window. The video page will appear.
  95.   4. Click Video Driver in the Draw Method box, then click Apply. Click
  96.      Close to shut down the QuickTime control panel.
  97.   5. Restart Movie Player or the appropriate application to try again.
  98.   6. If the application still does not work, repeat steps 1-4, and choose a
  99.      slower draw method (listed in the Draw Method box from fastest to
  100.      slowest).

  102. In the rare event you cannot gain access to the control panel (due to very
  103. serious video driver bugs), you will need to edit the QTW.INI file by hand.
  104. Most video playback problems can be corrected by adding:
  105.

  112. If you still have display problems, make sure you have installed the latest
  113. video driver from your computer manufacturer.

  116. Things You Need To Know
  117.  
  118.    * 32-bit QuickTime for Windows will not run on Windows 3.1 (even if
  119.      Win32s is installed).
  120.    * Sigma Designs' recently released RealMagic MPEG driver (v2.20) is
  121.      incompatible with QuickTime for Windows. As a workaround on Win3.1, you
  122.      can install the old RealMagic driver (v2.01), but on Win95 there is no
  123.      other version to install. Sigma Designs and Apple Computer are
  124.      currently working on a solution.
  125.    * The QuickTime for Windows control panel may crash if your computer is
  126.      using Cirrus display driver version 1.23. If this happens, you must
  127.      upgrade to version 1.24 or later.
  128.    * The game "Critical Path" requires MCIQTW.DRV to be in its directory.
  129.      When you install QuickTime for Windows 2.1.1 and delete the old
  130.      version, this file is removed. You must copy MCIQTW.DRV from your
  131.      "windows system" directory (usually C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM) to \CRITPATH\QTW
  132.      for the game to work.
  133.    * The game "Redshift" requires QTIM.DLL to be in its directory. When you
  134.      install QuickTime for Windows 2.1.1 and delete the old version, this
  135.      file is removed. You must copy QTIM.DLL from your "windows system"
  136.      directory (usually C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM) to \REDSHIFT\QTW for the game to
  137.      work.

  141. Modifying QTW.INI
  142.  
  143. Do not modify QTW.INI by hand. Please use QuickTime's Control Panel. See
  144. above (Quick Fix For Display Problems) for the one exception to this rule.

  147. Making Movies Playable on Both Macintosh and Windows
  148.  
  149. To make a movie playable on both the PC and the Mac, follow these steps:
  150.  
  151.    * Open a movie file using Movie Player 2.0 or above on the Macintosh.
  152.    * Choose Save As from the File menu.
  153.    * In the dialog box that appears, click the radio button labeled "Make
  154.      movie self-contained." This tells the utility to sever any links to
  155.      other movies after incorporating the relevant video into this movie.
  156.    * Select the checkbox labeled "Playable on non-Apple computers." This
  157.      causes the movie to be saved as a single fork movie.
  158.    * Rename the movie using PC naming conventions. The filename should be 8
  159.      characters in length for maximum portability. Use the extension ".mov."
  160.      For example: MYMOVIE.MOV
  161.  
  162. The resulting file is a QuickTime cross-platform movie that can be played on
  163. either a Macintosh or any x86-based computer with Windows 3.x, Windows NT,
  164. and Windows 95.
  165.  
  166. Remember, when creating movies on the Macintosh that the following features
  167. are not yet available on Windows:
  168.  
  169.    * MACE, sprites, time code, and modifier tracks
  170.    * Apple Component Video decompressor
  171.    * Multiple video tracks
  172.    * Display of non-burnt text tracks
